In the aftermath of Hurricane Irene, there are still many local families struggling this winter season. On Saturday, December 17th, 4 sonically gifted NYC bands will come together for one incredible night of rock to benefit The Wall Family Flood Relief Fund. After being forced from their home and losing all of their most treasured possessions & family photos, let's come together to help The Walls make new holiday memories and get the fresh start they so richly deserve. In the meantime, want to support a great cause and look good doing it? Its easy with the Wall-A-Thon benefit tees, donated by indie streetwear brand Brooklyn Royalty. The print was designed & screened locally by Shane Taylor of Blackbird NYC in Brooklyn.

100% of the proceeds go directly into a Paypal account for the Wall Family to use as they need it, when they need it. All of the printing, blank tees & tanks, shipping and ink are donated, so literally every cent of these shirts will help get the Walls back on their feet.

At the Wall-A-Thon Benefit Concert, we will selling these shirts onsite for $25 suggested donation. We'll even be able to accept credit card donations of any amount onsite to go straight into the Walls' bank account. To that end, we are giving all indie designers of mens and ladies apparel, jewelry and accessories an OPEN CALL opportunity to show us your stuff! In case you haven't heard, the first Brooklyn Royalty shop is opening this month in Williamsburg. We're called Kingdom, and our aim is to be the burg's 1st bar/boutique. The concept is a gorgeous {yet suitably funky} retail space where you can kick back a cocktail, listen to a live DJ AND buy the best of designer indiewear for guys & girls. And we'd love to fill the shop with new talent...
So, we are still looking a few exceptional local apparel, accessory and jewelry designers for the new boutique! If you're interested, its chance to break into a killer new concept + location {N4th Street & Bedford Ave=tons of summer shopping traffic}. Plus, we can work out drink specials and fun parties/trunk shows/runway shows/photoshoots to go with your designs. What a great night! Last Friday, we came out to support Brooklyn's own Semi-Precious Weapons for their first major-label video shoot of self-titled "Semi-Precious Weapons", an iconic single that will surely advance their rise from local indie fav to leaders of an international cult of manic rockers who will plaster frontman Justin Tranter's face on every inch of their bodies and snort glitter for breakfast.

Fresh off of a stunning 4-show run at Radio City Music Hall and at the cusp of the international leg of their tour with Lady Gaga, the guys took their day off to sit back, relax and film the wildest rock show we've seen in a while. The mood was set by subtle staging directions like, "Every man, woman & child better be pregnant when they leave here tonight!" and "If you don't have an STD yet, now's the time for a change!"

Inside Cameo Gallery, a photography exhibition will showcase original images in Tatted as well as nearly 200 images that did not make it into the book based on photographer Marianne Bernstein's Tattoo Series 2007-2009. Designer Bob Bland at Brooklyn Royalty used Body Faders fabric for the company's spring 2009 collection, which included tanks, tees, trunks, hoodies, scarves and bandannas. The pink-to-blue and teal-to-chartreuse lineup reminded people of the Hypercolor T-shirts that became popular in the 1980s but vanished when the dyes proved to be short-lived. They showed off some of the body faders fabrics during a fashion show in September on the Brooklyn Bridge.
"Everyone loved the color-changing fabrics," Bland said. "Thermochromatic jerseys are undoubtedly one of the biggest emerging trends for spring '09, but at Brooklyn Royalty, we are even more excited about future applications of the Body Faders' technology on finer woven fabrics like silk charmeuse, organic denim and wool. Definitely look for more interactivity in fabrics from us in future collections."

Brooklyn Royalty at Fashion Indie Week's Brooklyn Bridge Show

As a group of independent designers who know exactly how hard it is to rise through the ranks of NYC fashion, we were disappointed by the naive attitude of journalist Gillian Reagan in her article, "Fashion Bloggers Unite! You Have Nothing to Lose but Your Pariah Status", in yesterday's NY Observer.

Generally, we do not comment on specific articles because we appreciate all media coverage and viewpoints, but Brooklyn Royalty would not have had nearly the same amount of opportunities without the support of virtually everyone mentioned in the piece, including Fashion Indie, Coutorture and tonight's Digital Moda-sponsor Smashing Darling.

We have had the pleasure of knowing and working with Fashion Indie's Daniel Saynt and his staff for several years, and from their great coverage of the line from its inception to our inclusion in the wildly successful (and professionally done) SS09 Brooklyn Bridge Show, we have known Daniel to be a responsible, passionate advocate for indie fashion.

Any seasoned writer knows that each publication is required to take on a certain voice for their readers, and the fact that Fashion Indie's voice is provocative and edgy should not reflect on Daniel Saynt's character, merely on his choice of direction for the website. Additonally, every fashion blogger we've ever met has occasionally attended a runway show they were not invited to; it is basically a rite of passage for up-and-coming bloggers and we have a hard time believing that Style Coalition's Yuli Ziv hasn't taken in a few shows in this manner.

Fashion is a tough enough industry for everyone involved, designers and writers alike, without inventing conflicts like this on the pages of a major news publication. Have fun, celebrate your love of fashion, and keep a light-hearted attitude...after all, there's nothing less stylish than an uptight, boring Fashion Week.

Hollywood Glam

A quiet corner of Greenpoint is about to get more glamorous with the opening of Old Hollywood this Saturday. Tiffany Porter, buyer for Williamsburg clothier and jeweler Catbird, is opening her own vintage-inspired shop, with the aim of creating a community-based showcase of local talent working within the 1950s Hollywood aesthetic (think classy, pinup-style bathing costumes and feather headpieces).

Alongside Old Hollywood’s classic bags, hats, shoes, and clothes are vintage-inspired or reworked pieces by independent designers. Local labels include Digby & Iona, Brooklyn Royalty (who will be designing a line of corsets just for Old Hollywood), Brooklyn Based fave Jezebel, and house label Old Hollywood, whose jewelry collection includes feather necklaces and rings made of recycled metal and colored silver. Hair accessories like covetable vintage enamel hair clips, and braided, 1970s headbands (which add nice flair to the hipster headband trend) start at $10, while necklaces and cocktail rings are in the $70 and up range.

Porter also hand selects vintage clothing that won’t break the bank (sweaters start at $40 and dresses at $60). The store is stocked for fall with a great selection of coats, like a classic London Fog khaki trench, a cranberry faux fur, and a mustard wool pea coat. Knowing that many people love vintage but can’t always fit into retro styles, Porter will custom make dresses from vintage fabric and 1950s patterns come spring.

Old Hollywood has a boudoir feel with a comfy brocade loveseat and vintage knicknacks lining the shelves and side tables, including a small collection of pastel radios. Because it’s open till 10pm, later than most shops, Porter hopes people will come and browse before starting their night. “You can come buy a necklace, have a beer, and then go to a bar,” she says.

There are plans for a big opening bash around the middle of October, so keep your eyes peeled here for more details…like special Brooklyn Royalty gift bags.
